David was always ‘dog mad’ as a child. After pestering his parents for a dog of his own, he wanted a Labrador which arrived when he was twelve years old from a local breeder who encouraged him to show her. He was soon hooked and was fortunate enough to make up his first Labrador champion whilst he was still at school.
Eleven Labrador title holders were made up, including ‘Hugo’ who is still the Breed CC Record Holder (bred and co-owned by Mr and Mrs Kelley who were such good mentors and who bred his first champion). Beagles then took his interest and, in this breed, numerous champions have been campaigned, including three generations of champion males (Harrison, Harlequin and Jacob) who have produced many of the winners in the ring at the present time. Through his close friendship with Angela Williams, he has also co-owned/bred a Weimaraner title holder as well as nine Irish Water Spaniel title holders. In total, 38 UK title holders have been owned/bred in four breeds from two groups.
David has previously served on both a breed club committee and all breeds championship show committee as well as editing a book on the Labrador. He has delivered the Breed Standard talk several times on the Labrador and Beagle breed at various seminars.
He first awarded CCs in Labradors in 1992, Beagles in 2007 and has had the honour of judging both breeds at Crufts. Now he is approved to award CCs to six gundog breeds (including the Group) and two hound breeds. David is very much looking forward to judging Lagotto Romagnolo and Chesapeake Bay Retrievers without CCs as well as the Gundog Group at the City of Birmingham show in September.

Dobermann
-
-
I’ve been involved all my life with dogs, much to the annoyance of my parents.
I started my apprenticeship as a canine beautician while still in school, then went on to work with racing greyhounds. You can learn a lot from all the old trainers.
I got my first Dobermann in the early 1970s with my late husband Keith.
I decided to train for obedience with him, and one day I was asked if I would like to show him at a sanction show under Harry Glover. I then went on to win BIS, and I was bitten by the bug and have never looked back.
After great success both here and abroad, I wanted to get another breed, which was a miniature pincher, followed by Akita, Rottweiler, and Japanese Shiba Inu. All my breeds have been very successful all over the world. The most I get out of breeding is seeing other exhibitors great success with Hikay’s breeding.
While breeding and showing, I have also served as a secretary and helped form the association of the Japanese Shiba Inu.
I award CC’s in Dobermann, Rottweiler, Akita, and Japanese Shiba Inu. And I am also on the A3 list for Akita Inu and Dogue de Bordeaux.
Basset Hounds, Whippets (Dogs), Japanese Akita
Inu, Shar Pei, Brittany, German Longhaired Pointer, German

show and many other best in show awards.
I award challenge certificates in all groups in the uk groups and have judged in many countries such as
Australia, New Zealand, Korea, South Africa, Hong Kong, China, Pakistan and many European countries.

Junior Handlers &
Good Citizens
-
Meet our experienced judge Lucy Mottram who will be judging over all 4 days our Junior Handling, YKC members stakes and Good Citizen classes sponsored by the Kennel Club.
Lucy started showing Bearded Collies as a junior handler in the 1990’s, although she once qualified for the finals held at Richmond never quite mastered the art of junior handling, however this didn’t stop Lucy enjoying showing!
Lucy was a member of the KCJO (KC Junior Organisation as it used to be) and was selected to be a ‘runner’ for Crufts; this was Lucy first exposure to the organisational aspect of shows; many years on and Lucy is the Secretary of National Working & Pastoral Breeds Society and a committee member of Midland Counties Canine Society.
Lucy really enjoys showing her Polish Lowland Sheepdogs and has won championship show groups, puppy groups & Best in Shows with her dogs. Lucy awards CCs in Polish, Beardies, GSDs and Havanese.
Lucy notes “Juniors are such an important part of our hobby and its future and I’m so looking forward to judging their dogs and handling over four days at City of Birmingham”
Dogue De Bordeaux, Giant Schnauzer,
Hoverwart &
Portuguese Water Dogs.
I really jumped in the deep end with my initiation into dog showing. After visiting my sister in Canada, I fell in love with the Akita. Returning home to find there were none registered over here, my next job was to import one. Once she arrived, and completed her six months quarantine, I was persuaded to show her. She did really well, considering I had no idea what I was doing! Other people then also imported them, and we competed in rare breed classes for 10 years. 1990 was quite pivotal for me, the breed had challenge certificates for the first time, our import from America was the first UK Akita Champion, he went BIS all breeds, the first Akita to do this, and I had the privilege of award Challenge Certificates in the same year.
Other breeds have also been in my kennel, Dobermanns, Norfolk Terrier & Wheatens to name a few. Gradually I was asked to judge other breeds at Open Level, and these turned into CC appointments. I am currently passed for BIS, 3 Groups, and around 50 breeds covering all groups, which I feel is some achievement.
Judging has taken me various paths across the world, the furthest being Australia.
I am also very involved behind the scenes, currently on various committees, holding the post of Secretary, Treasurer and I am also BEC for a couple of breeds.
Airedale Terriers &
Norwich Terriers
-
I have had in interest in terriers since being a young boy and following in my fathers footsteps, who bred and worked terriers. I had my own working terriers from been 14 years old.
My interest changed from working terriers to KC registered terriers in the late 1970’s, when I purchased my first pedigree terrier, a Lakeland. I showed and bred these, with limited success. After my divorce, Bedlington terriers followed. My wife & I have been successful showing Bedlington terriers, winning many CC’s, making up many champions, been top breeder twice and breeding. We have also shown Manchester terriers in more recent years and have made up 4 champions, with other stud book entries. We have been KC assured breeders for many years and have been awarded the Certificate of Excellence from the KC.
I am passed at present by the KC to award CC’s in 23 terrier breeds and the Terrier group, I am also passed to award CC’s in whippets (another breed I own). Always very keen to gain more knowledge in terrier and hound breeds and attend as many Seminars as feasible. A Breed Speaker , Mentor & assessor for both Bedlington & Manchester terrier seminars.
I am currently the KC breed liaison representative for both Bedlington & Manchester Terriers and I am a Delegate for the Terrier Group.
I have an interest in several Terrier committees, notably been the Chairman of the Manchester Terrier Association and Chairman of the National Bedlington Terrier Club, also serving on the National Terrier Club, Chairman of The Northern Dog Club, Vice Chairman of the Northern Counties Sporting Terrier Club, as well as serving on the committee of Darlington Champ show. Also this year I am judging German Shepherd Dogs, a breed that was one of the best breeds to judge, given my first set of CCs to this breed in 1999 at Southern Counties, awarded Ch GAYVILLES NILO his final CC to break the breed record at Blackpool 2021, in 2010 I gave CH ELMO VOM HUNHNEGRAB best in show at Birmingham National as very young male winning his first CC he went on to win the Pastoral Group at Crufts the following year and I think he is now the breed record holder, I would like to believe my GSD critique from LKA highlighting about the well behaved exhibitors in this breed helped the breed council to successfully lobby the Kennel Club to stop the practice of sending field officer to check for double handling.

Throughout my childhood there was always a dog around, all different kinds of breeds, shapes and sizes, hence my love of dogs.
In 1993 we acquired our first German Short-haired puppy from the renowned Midlander kennel. From then on we were hooked!
During the next 20 years we bred 4 litters, under the Collwarwick affix, keeping a pup each time. Many of our dogs have had some success, both working and in the showring, gaining 1sts in Field Trials, Best in Shows and 2 RCCs.
I accepted my first judging appointment in 2004 and continue to enjoy this aspect of dog showing.
Currently I own 2 male gsps, aged 2 and 5, both descendants of our own past litters. They are a joy.
